Alaa Hussein is a member of the ProjectManagers.Org community. He shares his story on why he became an Oil & Gas Project Manager in the following interview:
Why did you become an Oil & Gas Project Manager?
I became project manager because I am a lover of Challenges and the best profession in this case is project manager.
What work were you doing previously?
Previously I was an official engineer in the public sector.
What are you doing now?
Now I’m project management senior advisor in Management System International and responsible for the ongoing delayed projects in the oil sector.
When was the moment you decided to make the change?
The moment I decided to make the change was When I took a professionally training on best practices in project management in 2007 and in this particular moment decided to professionalproject management.
Are you happy with the change?
Sure, I’m happy with the change.
What do you miss and what don’t you miss?
The stable life style, this is what I missed, as you know the project manager is homeless, live in suitcase, while what I don’t missed is the work routine which was bothering me so much.
How did you go about making this career move?
I am trying to develop myself always through continuous access to the latest best practices inproject management and apply that knowledge.
What didn’t go well? What ‘wrong turns’ did you take?
I think everything is well and I didn’t took any ‘wrong turns’.
How did you handle your finances to make your change possible?
I manage my financial matters carefully to maintain a decent standard of my family.
What was the most difficult thing about changing?
The most difficult thing about changing was the decision to resign from my previous job andobjection that I received from the family of this decision.
What were other difficulties and how did you overcome them?
Other difficulties was the work in a multicultural environment and I had overcome this difficulty bygetting training on communication.
What help did you get?
I had help from many of my friends and professional organizations like ProjectManagers.Org and Angel Berniz who was truly the best mentor for me.
What have you learned in the process?
I learned in the process that the certificates is very important for my career.
What do you wish you had done differently?
I wish that I get my professional certificates earlier.
What would you advise others to do in the same situation?
My advise is don’t let your job and work routine hold you back from taking professional certification that will be helpful in your career.
