How I Got My ISO 21500 Project Management Certification Online. I participated in the ISO 21500 Project Management Certification online program which is monthly organized by Angel at ProjectManagers.Org, and accredited by the International Institute of Executive Careers (IIEC).

I must confess that I was not aware about an ISO standard-setting work on the project until a few months ago. ISO 21500 is the first guide was published in 2012 with the participation of 33 countries, but I did not see Turkey among those countries.

During Angel’s successful ISO 21500 training in Project Management processes, I realized that the processes in ISO 21500 are almost same as the Processes in PMBOK Guide, the set of 10 subjects in ISO 21500 follows the set of Knowledge areas in PMBOK Guide. There are 39 Processes in ISO 21500 and 47 processes in PMBOK Guide. 33 processes of ISO 21500 are almost same the processes in PMBOK guide. The main differences between ISO 21500 and PMBOK guide is that ISO 21500 does not provide tools and techniques. ISO 21500 provides high-level description of concepts and processes and It can be used by any type of organization, including public, private or community organizations, and for any type of project, irrespective of complexity, size and duration.

The ISO Project comittee members very well explained what is the benefits of ISO 21500;
Miles Shepherd, Chair of the ISO project committee states that: “ISO 21500 enables people in any organization to understand how the discipline fits into a business environment. It is also intended to be used as a basic guide, aimed at the informed reader without an in-depth knowledge of project management.”

Karl Best, Secretary of the project committee, comments: “In an increasingly global economy project managers need guidance to help them understand the basic principles of managing projects. ISO 21500 can help those involved in projects improve the success of a wide variety of project types.

ISO 21500 which is a globally accepted standard for Project Management, should be introduced in Turkey because very few Project management Professionals are aware of the ISO 21500 Project Management Standard. It should be explained to the Organizations, the relevant associates and the goverment and its associations.

Project Manager National Occupational Standards document has already been prepared by the Government Vocational Qualifications Authority in Turkey. In my opinion, the definitions in this document, Tasks and Processes may be combined with definitions and processes in ISO 21500, and then the Project Manager National Occupation standard can enable and support new and experienced Project Managers and all stakeholders to speak same language in either national or multinational project environment.

To develop awareness in Turkey, the seminars, workshops, blogs can be prepared together with the project management associations. As a volunteer in PMI-TR Chapter, I am planning to create one.
