- Improvements to its business intelligence platform, including the use of Jaspersoft, provides enhanced self-service reporting that is designed for ease of use, without requiring a separate login, as well as the ability to export to other formats such as PDF or PNG images often used in executive presentations.

- The 9.30 release of HP PPM is the largest release of HP PPM in the past four years, and represents several improvements to user experience, to financial management, and to resource management, as well as to integration with third-party systems.
- HP is beginning to augment HP PPM with complementary, cloud-based applications (provided on a newer, separate cloud platform) to extend the usefulness of HP PPM. For example, HP released a cloud-based application for Idea and Proposal Management in March of this year.

- Microsoft Project Server provides the strongest level of integration between itself and desktop versions of Microsoft Project Professional in the market.
- When applying an approach to implementation that does not involve a lot of customization, Microsoft Project Server can provide a cost-effective solution for workgroups interested in automating their execution-level project processes and activities.
- To support connection between Microsoft Project Server and development teams, the product’s integration with Team Foundation Server allows TFS users to update effort estimates in TFS using Visual Studio or Team Explorer, while project managers in Project Server can receive these updates through Project Server and update and repost the project plan as needed.
Planisware

SAP Portfolio and Project Management is SAP’s company IT PPM project management software.

- For companies already heavily using SAP products, SAP Portfolio and Project Management can be an attractive option, because it can be implemented as a stand-alone product in an SAP environment, and leverage inherent integration with other SAP applications and data essential to effective project management and reporting, such as employee data and financial and budget information.
- SAP Portfolio and Project Management is now also a part of SAP Solution Manager, giving SAP administrators a good IT PPM tool for managing projects and other activities pertaining to a deployed SAP ERP solution.

- Extensions, such as Sciforma’s Agile Extension, are useful when adding specific contextual capabilities, reports, workflows and views to the product. Sciforma offers Extensions for agile, PPM and project management.
- Complete rewriting of Sciforma’s client application in HTML5 has greatly enhanced the product’s overall usability, navigation and user experience.
- In the process of its conversion to HTML5, Sciforma optimized its product release cycles and now provides a new code release once every three months.
How to get into Gartner Magic Quadrant?
The inclusion criteria for being eligible to be included in the Gartner Magic Quadrant is the following:
- The product must be an IT PPM product supporting internal IT PPM.
- The product must be generally available and actively marketed for the past four consecutive years, without any significant company, product or service disruptions. PPM providers that have “restarted” or “resurrected” older IT PPM companies or product lines/platforms are not included.
- Providers must have acquired at least 10 new IT PPM customers (not repeat business) on average, per year, between 2009 and 2014.
- Providers must have $10 million in annual revenue or significant financial backing.
- Specific for Magic Quadrant for Cloud-Based IT Project and Portfolio Management Services:
- Product deployment is significantly of cloud-native and cloud-optimized application services.
- As a standard way of doing business, the provider must offer short-term contracts that are usually no longer than 12 months in length. Allowances are made for multiyear agreements where applicable.
- Average deployment times must be between two weeks and 30 days.
- These providers can support very small numbers of end users (for example, less than 30 users), but can also scale up to support some cases involving hundreds or thousands of users.
- A significant percentage of the provider’s installed base is typically on short-term, 12-month subscriptions, involving a multitenant environment. PPM functionality is deployed as cloud-native or cloud-optimized application services.
- Specific for Gartner Magic Quadrant for IT Project and Portfolio Management Software Applications:
- Strong history in doing IT PPM product in the market.
- Product deployment modes are on-premises or cloud-hosted.
- The product is deployed as a “dedicated instance” for each customer.
- Providers must be able to prove they have secured at least 10 new IT PPM customers (not repeat business or renewals) in the past 12 months.
- The provider’s main business model is that of offering long-term contracts of three or more years on a consistent basis. Twelve-month contracts are rarely offered, or, in many cases, do not usually make business sense to the vendors providing these solutions.
- Providers do not typically support prospects requiring less than 30 licenses per implementation, unless they are midsize vendors participating in this market. Larger providers typically require a set minimum number of end users per customer.
- Deployment times average three to 12 months for complete implementations.
- Most of the existing provider’s IT PPM installed base are on dedicated instances and multiyear contracts.
